Former textile mills along Suzhou Creek. Now 100+ studios and galleries showing contemporary Chinese and international art. More "real" art scene — actual working studios, artist residencies, commercial galleries.
Best for: Art buyers, serious gallery hoppers, Suzhou Creek atmosphere
Mostly FreeFormer municipal abattoir (1933), now the most architecturally surreal building in Shanghai. The concrete "cattle walkways" spiraling through the interior are unlike anything else. Food market, boutiques, event space.
Best for: Architecture lovers, weekend food market, Instagram shots
Free EntryThey're about 2km apart — you can see both in a half-day on Route 4 (Local Line): M50 → lunch → 1933 → Duolun Road Cultural Street → Sichuan North Road for dinner.
The best galleries at M50 cluster near the Suzhou Creek waterfront. Look for Studio Rouge, ShanghART Gallery and Don Gallery — they show work you won't see in tourist Shanghai. Galleries are closed Mondays and some open only by appointment; check before going.
The Suzhou Creek riverbank next to M50 has been developed into a walking path. At dusk the old mill buildings and the creek together make for very photogenic light.
