📖 What to Know

Most visitors pass through People's Square as a metro interchange without realizing it's ringed by three free world-class museums. The Shanghai Museum alone has one of Asia's finest collections of Chinese antiquities. All three require a Chinese ID or passport — bring yours.

The square itself is worth a morning walk — it was Shanghai's former racecourse, converted after 1949 into a formal civic space. Watch locals do tai chi, walk backwards for exercise (a Chinese health practice), and feed pigeons in the early morning.

🏛 Three Museums, All Free

🏺
Shanghai Museum FREE
One of China's finest — bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy, paintings and furniture spanning 5,000 years. The bronze collection is world-class. Bring your passport for free entry. Closed Mondays.
⏰ Tue–Sun 10am–6pm (last entry 5pm) · Free with ID
🏙
Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center ¥30
A giant scale model of Shanghai — the whole city — taking up an entire floor. Surprisingly interesting for understanding how massive and planned modern Shanghai is. The 2050 vision models are fascinating.
⏰ Tue–Sun 9am–5pm · ¥30 adult, ¥15 student
🎨
Shanghai Art Museum (MOCA) VARIES
Contemporary art in the northwest corner of the square. Rotating exhibitions — sometimes free, sometimes ticketed depending on the show. Worth checking the current exhibition before going.
⏰ Tue–Sun 10am–6pm · Check current exhibition for pricing

Jia Jia Tang Bao佳家汤包
Widely considered the best xiaolongbao in Shanghai — the kind locals go to, not tourists. Thin skin, pork filling, abundant soup. The Huanghe Road branch is a 5-min walk from the square. Arrive before 11am or after 2pm to avoid the worst queue.
