Shanghai's former French Concession (1849–1943) is now the city's most charming neighborhood for walking — a dense grid of plane-tree-lined streets, Art Deco villas, 1930s apartments, boutique cafes and independent bookshops. No entrance fee. Just walk.
The heart of it is the "Wutong District" (梧桐区) — named after the parasol trees (法国梧桐) that the French planted along every street. In autumn they turn golden. In summer they provide a leafy canopy that makes even a hot day bearable.
The most famous street is Wukang Road (武康路), where the 1924 Normandie Apartments building sits like a ship's prow at the junction of Wukang and Huaihai roads. Every visitor takes the same shot. The surrounding network of streets is far quieter and more interesting.
Pairs well with Tianzifang in the morning and Xintiandi for dinner
