📖 What to Know

Shanghai's former French Concession (1849–1943) is now the city's most charming neighborhood for walking — a dense grid of plane-tree-lined streets, Art Deco villas, 1930s apartments, boutique cafes and independent bookshops. No entrance fee. Just walk.

The heart of it is the "Wutong District" (梧桐区) — named after the parasol trees (法国梧桐) that the French planted along every street. In autumn they turn golden. In summer they provide a leafy canopy that makes even a hot day bearable.

The most famous street is Wukang Road (武康路), where the 1924 Normandie Apartments building sits like a ship's prow at the junction of Wukang and Huaihai roads. Every visitor takes the same shot. The surrounding network of streets is far quieter and more interesting.

🛣 Streets Worth Walking

Wukang Road (武康路)
The famous one. Normandie Apartments at the north end. Lined with specialty cafes and boutiques. Best for photos in morning light. Weekends it's shoulder-to-shoulder; weekday mornings you can breathe.
Anfu Road (安福路)
Instagram cafe capital. Beautiful storefronts, good coffee. But many are style-over-substance — a ¥60 latte in a gorgeous room. Fine for photos; be selective about what you order.
Wuyuan Road (五原路)
One block from the crowds and far more local. Old French villas, a handful of wine bars, much quieter. Great for just wandering with no plan.
Julu Road (巨鹿路)
Has evolved into a bar and restaurant strip. Better for dinner or evening drinks than daytime. Mix of local Shanghai restaurants and international bars.

⚠️ Practical Notes

🍜 What to Eat Nearby

The French Concession has some of Shanghai's best food — from proper brunch cafes to decades-old local restaurants. The trick is knowing which blocks have the real stuff.
Wukang Road Brunch Cafes武康路早午餐
Several good brunch spots along and just off Wukang Road. Look for ones with hand-written menus and local clientele. Eggs benedict, fresh juice, good coffee. Generally good quality.
¥80–150/person
📍 Along Wukang Road, north of Fuxing West Road
🍝
Julu Road Dinner Strip巨鹿路餐饮街
For dinner, Julu Road has the best variety at reasonable prices — a mix of local Shanghai small plates, Japanese, Italian. Much better value than the tourist-facing restaurants on Huaihai Road. Walk and pick what looks busy.
¥60–100/person
📍 Julu Road (巨鹿路), between Shaanxi and Ruijin
🏮
Changle Road Local Spots长乐路小馆
Parallel to Julu Road, Changle Road has smaller, quieter restaurant choices — a few excellent Yunnan and Sichuan places that locals return to weekly. Cheaper, less trendy, better food.
¥40–70/person
📍 Changle Road (长乐路), Xuhui district
🍷
Julu Road Bar Street (Evening)巨鹿路酒吧街
After 9pm, Julu Road becomes a bar crawl. Pick a quiet bar (清吧) rather than a nightclub — more social, better drink quality. Sit outside with a craft beer and watch the French Concession evening crowd.
¥60–100 for drinks
📍 Julu Road evening, multiple bars
