Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Harbin Ice and Snow World festival?
The Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival runs from approximately January 5 to late February each year. The Ice and Snow World (冰雪大世界), the main venue with illuminated large-scale ice buildings and sculptures, is at its best from January 5 to the end of January. The Sun Island Snow Sculpture Art Expo runs concurrently. Check harbinicesnow.com for the current year's exact dates.
How cold does Harbin get in winter?
January is the coldest month, averaging -16°C to -24°C, with extreme cold periods reaching -30°C to -35°C. Wind chill makes it feel significantly colder. At these temperatures, exposed skin can develop frostbite in 10–30 minutes. Layering is essential: thermal base layer, insulated mid-layer, and a windproof outer shell. Hand warmers, thermal socks, and waterproof boots rated to -40°C are standard winter gear in Harbin.
Is Harbin worth visiting in summer?
Yes — Harbin in summer (June–August, 20–28°C) is completely different from its winter identity. The city's distinctive Russian colonial architecture (Saint Sophia Cathedral, Central Avenue, Stalin Park) is more pleasant to explore in warm weather. The Sun Island wetlands and Siberian Tiger Park are excellent summer destinations. Summer crowds are far smaller than winter.
What is the Russian influence in Harbin?
Harbin was founded in 1898 as a Russian railway junction city on the Chinese Eastern Railway, built by the Russian Empire. Saint Sophia Cathedral, Central Avenue, and the Volga Manor preserve this heritage. The famous Harbin sausage (红肠) and locally brewed Harbin beer both have Russian origins.
