How to use your comprehension score: 95%+ = comfortable reading. 90–95% = occasional dictionary needed. 80–90% = intensive reading. Below 80% = challenging even with a dictionary.
Why are some words highlighted but others not?
The tool uses a ~4,500-word dictionary built from the official HSK 2.0 wordlist. Single Chinese characters as well as multi-character words are checked. Proper nouns, regional dialects, and words added after 2020 may not appear in the database.
What should I read at my current HSK level?
HSK 2 learners: graded readers and simple news on VOA Slow Chinese. HSK 3–4: The Chairman's Bao (graded news). HSK 5: standard Chinese news sites (人民日报, 新华社). HSK 6+: academic journals, contemporary novels, official documents.
Why doesn't this tool play audio?
Hover over (or click) any colored word to see its pinyin romanization and English meaning. Audio is planned for a future update.
Does this support Traditional Chinese?
The word database uses Simplified Chinese. Traditional Chinese characters will mostly appear as "unknown" (grey). A Traditional Chinese version is planned.
This tool is free, offline, and always will be. If it helped you study, a coffee keeps it going.
